🌿 Pocahontas: The True Story Behind the Disney Film

First of all, I have been a huge Pocahontas collector since I was a little girl. But unfortunately, I didn't retrieve my entire collection, and so, more than 20 years later, my collection continues to grow day by day.

When one thinks of Pocahontas, one immediately pictures the famous 1995 Disney film, John Smith, Meeko, Flit, and the song "Colors of the Wind."

But did you know that Pocahontas actually existed? Her story is quite different from the one told by Disney… and that's precisely what makes it fascinating for history buffs and vintage toy collectors.

🪶 The Real Pocahontas

Pocahontas was born around 1597 in Virginia. She was the daughter of Powhatan, chief of a powerful alliance of indigenous peoples.

When the English arrived in Jamestown in 1607, Pocahontas was still a child, about 10 or 11 years old. It was around this time that she met John Smith.

⚔️ Did Pocahontas really save John Smith?

This is one of the most famous episodes of the legend.

John Smith recounted being captured and then brought before Powhatan. According to his account, Pocahontas intervened to prevent his execution.

But historians remain cautious. John Smith's account was written several years after the events and could have been a misinterpretation of a Powhatan ceremony.

One thing is certain, however: Pocahontas and John Smith never experienced the romance portrayed by Disney.

💔 A much more tragic story

A few years later, Pocahontas was captured by the English. She converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca.

She then married John Rolfe and traveled with him to England in 1616.

But her fate would be tragic: Pocahontas fell ill and died in March 1617, when she was only about twenty years old.

🌈 1995: Disney transforms Pocahontas into a legend

In 1995, Disney released Pocahontas: An Indian Legend, its 33rd animated feature film.

The film transformed the historical story into a grand romantic and musical adventure. Disney particularly highlighted nature, tolerance, and the encounter between two cultures.

For an entire generation in the 90s, Pocahontas became an essential heroine, accompanied by Meeko, Flit, and Grandmother Willow.

Like many big Disney successes, the film spawned a multitude of merchandise: dolls, figures, plush toys, books, and other toys.

The 90s notably saw the appearance of many Pocahontas dolls and figures, now sought after by lovers of vintage Disney toys.

A doll still with its box, a figure with its accessories, or simply a toy found in a box can immediately transport us back to the 90s.

The true story is much more complex than the animated film, but the Disney film allowed several generations to discover this character.
